Careers Information and Guidance is an essential aspect of our ‘Successful Lives’ tutor programme, aimed at providing students and parents with occupational guidance and vocational advice, helping learners to think about what they want to do with their lives and about the sort of people they wish to become.
We believe that co-ordinated provision is central to developing these aims with curriculum subject areas, tutors and external agencies where appropriate making significant contributions. In time, we will have an independent careers adviser available to students in Years 8 – 13. They will provide guidance interviews for pupils and participates in specific lessons in the Careers Education programme.
In Year 7, the ‘Successful Lives’ curriculum provides pupils with experiences which contribute to a growing understanding of themselves and their strengths and limitations. It will also develop the skills associated with choices and decision making. We will work with external providers such as Careerpilot, Enabling Enterprise and the Platform Project to ensure learners think carefully about their futures and are signposted to the best support available.
We are committed to working with Swindon’s many employers and with regional further and higher education providers to develop in our students a full understanding of the options awaiting them at age 14, 16 and 18, and will use the guidance of the Gatsby foundation to ensure we meet and exceed DfE requirements for careers guidance. During their time with us, for students this will include:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal guidance
