The following people form our Pre-Opening Team.
GRAHAM DAVIS (PRINCIPAL)
Graham has taught for 25 years in four varied secondary schools, holding leadership positions in the past three. He is passionate about the difference that a fantastic school can make to the lives of young people, and is excited at the prospect of ensuring that Great Western Academy gives students the best possible grounding for their future.
Graham is a Mathematics teacher by background and has also run an outstandingly successful large Sixth Form, but as a sportsman and musician sees a broad education as key to success. He will be ensuring that all aspects of GWA run smoothly, that teaching and learning is of the highest quality possible, and that students gain a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities.
DAVID CLARKE (ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL)
David joins in April 2018 from Hardenhuish School in Chippenham, where he is Assistant Headteacher with specific responsibility for whole school teaching and learning and staff development. He is also a well-respected leader of training across Wiltshire schools and brings strong experience of school improvement strategies. After graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a degree in History and Politics, David completed his PGCE at the University of Gloucestershire before taking up his first role in schools as a teacher of history. He has since been curriculum leader for history and was head of key stage 4 at Cirencester Deer Park School before joining Hardenhuish in 2011.
Mary is an experienced executive with over 30 years’ senior management in the IT industry, for Capgemini. She is currently the Commercial Manager for a local manufacturing Company as well as being an elected Councillor for Swindon Borough Council. She also has over 10 years’ experience as a School Governor, including being Chair.
Andrew has many years’ experience of leadership, teaching, advising and strategy development within the education sector. He has also successfully bid and opened new schools with his work for the Diocese of Bristol Academies Trust and previously Local Authorities where he was a Senior Adviser.
His current role is as an Education consultant in roles supporting schools in difficulty in England and Wales a well as well as working for the Education Funding Agency (DfE). He is also the Chair of the BRITE Academy Trust.
Cilla has worked in the educational sector for over 25 years, as both Teacher, Faculty Head and Director of Curriculum. She has, until very recently, been a Governor at the Wellington Academy near Tidworth where she has had special responsibility for academic performance and curriculum issues.
Paul has 18 years’ experience in the education sector. He has worked as a practitioner and manager in Primary, Secondary, Special School, FE and HE settings. His current role is Director of Curriculum, Quality and CIS at New College Swindon. Paul’s specialisms include quality improvement, data application and curriculum design.
Michael is a qualified accountant who works at New College in the Finance Department and has significant experience in the education sector. He is a graduate of Exeter University. He also teaches part-time as part of the Business Team and is Prince 2 qualified.
Ian is currently Head of ICT at New College Swindon, with responsibility for IT operations, support, development and e-learning. He has spent many years providing strategic and operational IT consultancy to companies within the education and charity sectors. He holds a BSc in Computer Information Systems Design along with PRINCE 2 Project Management qualifications.
The Governing Body
Details of Governors at Great Western Academy will be published as they become available but they are likely to include: a Chair of Governors, the Head of School, the New College Principal, staff representatives, parent representatives and community representatives.
