Interview with our PrincipalApr 05 2017
Following the announcement of our Principal last week we wanted to let you know more about him....
The Marketing Team at New College met with Graham Davis, the newly appointed Principal of Great Western Academy to find out some more about him and his vision for the school. Graham will take up his role in September 2017 a year before the school opens to be involved in promoting the school before it opens and can’t wait to get started.
Graham trained at Warwick University and the University of Nottingham and has worked in schools in Bicester, Swindon and Newbury. Originally teaching Maths, Graham has been at Trinity School Newbury since 2012 as the Deputy Head Teacher. Outside of school, Graham is interested in sports and music and enjoys spending time with his family.
What inspired you to apply for the role at GWA?
“The chance to shape a school right from the start was too good to pass up. I am ambitious to lead a thriving and forward-thinking learning environment and the ethos set out for GWA matches that perfectly.”
What is your vision of the school?
“GWA will be a local centre of educational excellence. Students will enjoy their learning and staff will enjoy teaching them and will inspire them to make the very most of their talents. We will encourage high aspirations, and expect the very highest standards at all times.”
What role will the school have within the community?
“GWA will be a key feature of the new North Swindon community, welcoming parents and businesses to support the students’ learning and providing a wide range of facilities for use by the wider community.”
What will you be doing before the school opens?
"I will be working hard to make sure that everything is in place for GWA to be inspiring right from day one! My priority will be to be out and about in the local community, visiting primary schools and local businesses and hosting opportunities for parents and students to find out more about the academy - especially those in current Year 5 who will need to apply for a place in a secondary school in Autumn 2017. Clearly there are a wealth of other hugely important jobs, not least securing the very best teachers and support staff for the academy and ensuring the curriculum they teach is exactly what students need to succeed. Making sure the fantastic building is completed and the local community understand how and when it will be ready is also an exciting challenge.”
What are you most looking forward to?
"September 1st 2018 when we see our first Year 7 and 12 students arrive at GWA, full of anticipation and excitement. After that I will relish what I have always about teaching – seeing students progress and flourish and gaining excellent results. Being a keen sports fan I would love to see our students winning all the local sporting tournaments of course!"
Great Western Academy will open in September 2018 for Year 7 and Year 12 students. Future events are currently being planned for prospective parents and will be announced in due course.
